Lôn Capel community herb planter

Gwaenysgor Village Volunteers installed the first in a planned series of biodiversity planters on unadopted land on Lon Capel, Gwaenysgor. This community project takes unused and unowned spaces and converts them into native wild flower gardens and herb beds in a new effort to make the village of Gwaenysgor green.

The site was chosen as it’s in the center of the village conservation area and directly opposite the Eagle & Child Pub which is why so many locals and visitors will see it.

For decades, this space had been a haven for birds and other wildlife before it was vandalised in 2023 when its bushes were cut down without consent.

September 2023. CCTV footage of the area being vandalised.

Since then, the area had become unloved, unmaintained, and frequently covered in abandoned vehicles. Gwaenysgor people were determined to bring it back to life.

Following the biodiversity planting scheme from Gwaenysgor Conservation Group, local residents filled the large new planter with plants to attract bees and butterflies. They also planted herbs for the villagers to share. This follows the already successful project to build a community vegetable garden at Gwaenysgor Village Hall.

Lon Capel resident Andy Clarke said:

“Today was an amazing achievement by people coming together to make something beautiful for Gwaenysgor village. The space was unused and unadopted, although members of Gwaenysgor Conservation Group have kept the area tidy for decades. It goes to show how with a team effort, we can make our village even more beautiful.”

Residents provided materials, plants, and labour for the new community herb planter. Local farmers also got involved by using their machinery to clear weeds on the unmaintained verge alongside Arweifa’s historic stone wall, widening Lon Capel by almost two-feet.

Gwaenysgor residents plan even more projects to turn Gwaenysgor even greener, improve its biodiversity, and ensure the village is conserved for generations to come.

Repaired and replanted

North Wales Police have completed their investigation into criminal damage and have issued the attackers with a Conditional Caution which requires them to repay the villagers for the damage they caused to the Gwaenysgor community herb garden.

Undeterred by the cruelty inflicted on them, residents have rallied around to repair and replant and are continuing their efforts to improve how their village looks. Gwaenysgor resident Andy Clarke said:

The herb garden has been restored and looks beautiful, but what is even more incredible to see is the community spirit. The sad incident a few weeks ago has really brought people together, so I hope some good will have come from such a sad event.”

Once a month, local residents turn out to clean and tidy public spaces around Gwaenysgor. After several abandoned cars were removed from Lon Capel, village volunteers reclaimed the space next to the herb garden. It’s now ready for planting spring bulbs and wildflowers.
