Gwaenysgor Village Volunteers
Separate from the Gwaenysgor Conservation Group, “Gwaenysgor Village Volunteers” is a growing number of residents who regularly get together to improve the village’s appearance.
Inside the grounds of Gwaenysgor Village Hall, “Gwaenysgor Village Volunteers” installed six large vegetable planters in a Community Vegetable Garden, which grows produce for residents. This scheme has been highly successful. They have also installed a herb planter on Lon Capel and organise regular events where villagers come together to upkeep communal spaces.
Every three months, “Gwaenysgor Village Volunteers” decide which projects they aim to complete in the coming quarter and agree on a monthly plan of action. The plan includes specific projects, weekend weeding, and other activities to improve the village’s appearance.
By taking a community-first rather than a committee-first approach, Gwaenysgor Village Volunteers aim to engage with residents and involve them in decisions. This will increase the chances of success by giving people a say in how our village looks, encouraging them to participate, and helping with the long-term maintenance of these projects.
Gwaenysgor Village Green
In readiness for the Remembrance Day commemoration on Sunday 11th November, Gwaenysgor Village Volunteers spent a week working on Gwaenysgor Village Green where the service is held. Future plans include restoring the bench which is popular with locals and visitors, repairing the wooden nativity frame, and planting cut flower beds to return the Village Green to its place as a centerpiece in the village.
Gwaenysgor community garden
Gwaenysgor Village Volunteers has built a vegetable garden in the grounds of Gwaenysgor Village Hall. The vegetable garden is maintained by and is for the benefit of members of the community. The produce grown is free to everyone who needs it.
Lôn Capel community herb planter
Gwaenysgor Village Volunteers installed the first in a planned series of biodiversity planters on unadopted land on Lon Capel, Gwaenysgor. This community project takes unused and unowned spaces and converts them into native wild flower gardens and herb beds in a new effort to make the village of Gwaenysgor green.
